Montagut and Oix

Montagut i Oix (formerly known as Montagut de Fluvià) is a municipality in the Garrotxa comarca, in the Girona Regions, in the sector of Alta Garrotxa, with its capital in the town of Montagut. In 1972, the old and extensive municipal term of Oix was merged into the municipality of Montagut de Fluvià. The new municipality adopted the new name of Montagut i Oix as of November 15, 2002. It borders to the north with the municipalities of Albanyà and Camprodon and with the current French border, to the west with that of the Vall de Bianya, to the south with those of Sant Jaume de Llierca and Sant Joan les Fonts, and to the east with those of Argelaguer and Tortellà. The municipal term occupies a very mountainous sector of the upper Fluvià valley, mainly the valleys of the streams of Oix, Escales, and Sant Aniol. The most prominent peaks are Comanegra (1,558 m), Puig de Bassegoda (1,373 m), the cliffs of Gitarriu (1,196 m), Montpetit (898 m), and the mountain of Cós (612 m).
