The place is first mentioned in 1157 under the name Valporriera; in 1180 it was referred to as Vallem Porreram. It formed part of the territory of Ciurana de Tarragona until Arbert de Castellvell donated the lands to the monastery of San Vicente de Pedrabona, in the Garraf region. The monastery was very far from these lands, so repopulation was not happening. For this reason, in 1180, the lands were granted to Pere de Déu, who was tasked with repopulating the area. However, the Pedrabona monastery opposed this grant and in 1201 issued a letter of settlement to the inhabitants. The controversy was resolved in 1203 when the bishop of Tortosa ruled in favor of the monastery.
