Vilabertran is a municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca to the east of Figueres, between the courses of the Muga River to the north and the Manol River to the south.
The first record of Vilabertran dates back to the year 975. It speaks of a small hamlet with a little church that soon expanded and welcomed a group of monks led by Abbot Pere Rigau. As a result of a land donation in the year 1069, the community of canons instituted Rigau as its head and established the foundations for the creation of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Vilabertran, based on the Rule of St. Augustine. Throughout the 11th century, the monastery gained great prestige, and during the following centuries, it expanded its heritage thanks to the protection of the Rocabertí family, viscounts of Peralada. From the year 1592, it became a collegiate church, which remained operational until the Mendizábal expropriation in 1835.
