The city has a continental Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influences. Summers are hot, with maximum temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius.
The city was reestablished in the 9th century by the Arabs at the site of an ancient Visigoth settlement. The city quickly flourished. In 1230, it was recaptured by King Alfonso IX of León. The city remains very important and is regularly the scene of border wars between Spain and Portugal.
