Badajoz es una gran ciudad fronteriza con 150,000 habitantes. Badajoz disfruta de su buena ubicación junto al río Guadiana y se beneficia en gran medida del comercio entre Portugal y España. La ciudad tiene un clima mediterráneo continental con influencias atlánticas. Los veranos son calurosos, con temperaturas máximas cercanas a los 45 grados Celsius.
La ciudad fue refundada en el siglo IX por los árabes en el lugar de un antiguo asentamiento de los visigodos. La ciudad florece rápidamente. En 1230 fue reconquistada por el rey Alfonso IX de León. La ciudad sigue siendo muy importante y es testigo regularmente de guerras fronterizas entre España y Portugal.
