The port city of Tarraco was the first Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. When you explore the streets and squares along the Mediterranean Sea, you immediately understand why this charming city was a favorite destination of Emperor Augustus. The Roman culture remains strongly present in modern Tarragona thanks to monuments like the amphitheater and the ruins of the Forum. Therefore, Tarraco absolutely had to be included on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
In May, you can relive the influential Roman period all over again. The annual festival Tarraco Viva lets you taste authentic recipes during historical performances such as gladiatorial contests and classical Roman theater.
