Franciscan convent of San Luis el Real

Description

After the capture of Málaga, any trace of the Muslim city had to be erased. Much of this process fell upon the religious orders. One of these orders was that of the Franciscans, who founded as many as 11 convents during the Catholic Monarchs in the province, demonstrating that they had the blessing of the monarchs.

After a first failed concession due to it not being to their liking, the Catholic Monarchs, through the Royal Decree issued on October 27 in Jaén, granted the necessary space for the construction of the convent of San Luis el Real. The dedication of the cenoby originates from these monarchs. The day they entered the city was the feast day of Saint Louis of Toulouse, August 19, and they attributed the surrender of the city to him, naming him the patron of the city.

This cenoby was responsible for the opening of one of the ancient city gates that had been sealed during the War of Granada, which was renamed the Arch of San Francisco, committing to fund a new wooden door and a guard to live in the tower to watch over it. In addition to all this, they placed a marble Immaculate Conception with two lanterns. The convent was one of the most important in the city. It was disentailed in 1836. Today, the layout of the compass is preserved along with a part that houses the María Cristina Hall.
