This church was one of the four parishes that the Kings ordered to be built in the city in 1487. They made great stress that one of the parishes should be dedicated to St. Cyriacus and St. Paula, martyrs who died in the tenth persecution of the Emperor Diocletian and Maximian on June 18, 303 and who were highly venerated throughout Baetica. The city never lost devotion to these Martyrs, even under Muslim rule. The church was built in the Gothic-Mudejar style, being remodelled in the eighteenth century, becoming the most representative example of the city of the Malaga Rococo.
