Gràcia Bell Tower

Description

The Campanar de Gràcia or Clock Tower was built around 1870 in the Vila de Gràcia square. It is a protected work as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest.

The clock tower is located in the center of the Vila de Gràcia square and, with almost 33 meters in height, is configured as the tallest public tower in the district. Although it is primarily built with stone blocks, brick was used for the construction of the windows that open onto it, the vertical strips that decorate it, and the corners of the structure. The tower features a solid square stone base, which is topped on each of its faces with the coats of arms of the villa of Gràcia, of Barcelona, of the Principality of Catalonia, and of the arms of Queen Isabel II. On the side of the base that faces the Town Hall building, there is a fountain—framed by a large arch—that features two sculpted spouts in the shape of faces that expel water from their mouths. On the upper side of the fountain, also framed by the arch, there is a commemorative plaque that recalls the year of its construction, the damages suffered during the popular uprising of the conscription of 1870, and its restoration in 1882.
