San Juan de Palau is the parish church of the Alt-Empordà municipality of Palau Sabardera in the province of Girona. Of Romanesque origin, it is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia and protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest. [1]
The church of Palau was built between 1022 and 1070, dates between the consecration of the monastery of San Pedro de Rodas and the first Empordà temples. Possibly, the first lord who promoted the construction of the church was an ancestor of Bernat Palau. This is located on the site of an ancient Roman villa, built by the ancient inhabitants of Palau who used granites from the area, and mortar from the "Forn de Cal". The primitive church consisted of a small rectangular plan lacking a transept, with the entrance located to the east and without the current chapels, sacristy or transept, with barrel vaults and cruciform pillars that supported the eight existing formeros arches, much lower and heavier than the current ones.
