The castle of Montsoriu is situated between the towns of Arbucias, Breda, and San Felíu de Buxalleu in the Catalan comarca of La Selva, located on a hill 650 meters high, within the Montseny natural park.
Its first documented date is from the year 1002 in the land donation to the monastery of San Cugat del Vallés. In 1033, the marriage of Ermessenda de Montsoriu to Guerau de Cabrera took place, founders of the monastery of San Salvador de Breda, the center of the viscountcy of Cabrera-Gerona. In a donation from the year 1053, the castle of Soriu is mentioned, and the title of viscount of Gerona was definitively changed to Cabrera starting from Guerau III Ponç. The viscount Guerau V of Cabrera was involved in the conquest of Mallorca under the orders of King Jaime I. The royal chronicler Bernat Desclot refers to the castle in these terms in the year 1285:
