The present appearance of the castle is the result of numerous reforms. Its origins possibly date back to Roman times, when it was a centre of agricultural production. The second stage was the 11th century. The building was turned into a fortified country house to withstand the incursions and conflicts of the time. Centuries later, in the 16th century, the strong house was extended once more with defensive elements. However, the most important reforms started at the end of the 19th century, when Ramon Montaner wanted to adapt the building to the tastes of the time. To do this work, he called on Lluís Domènech i Montaner, who was a member of the family. The architect gave a mediaeval air to the castle by introducing pieces from Tallat monastery.
