The Mont-roig castle is located on the top of the same name at 296 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Darnius. It has been a Cultural Heritage Site since 1988. According to legend, the name comes from the blood of the lady of the castle and her lover, who were murdered by her husband in a fit of jealousy. However, the name likely comes from the fact that the clayey soil gives reddish hues both on the mountain and on the walls of the castle, which make use of this material. The castle is visible from many points in the region.
