The church of Santa María de Farfaña is built on a hill, next to the castle and overlooking the town of Castellón de Farfaña in the Catalan region of Noguera, in the province of Lleida.
In the 12th century, there was a primitive Romanesque temple, the chapel of the castle. This construction was restored in the mid-14th century. The construction was initiated in 1347 by Countess Cecilia of Urgel and the following year work was already underway. The project continued under Peter II of Urgel, son of Cecilia and James I of Urgel.
