Asturica Augusta was a Roman city in the territory of the Asturians, corresponding to present-day Astorga, in the province of León. It was the capital of the legal convent of Asturum. Ptolemy mentions Asturica in his work and states that it was an Asturian city and the capital of the Amaci, a claim that has led to ascribing it a pre-Roman origin. There is no archaeological evidence in Astorga, but it has an urban morphology similar to other fortified settlements with an origin predating the arrival of the Romans.
