The Arlanzón reservoir is located in the eastern part of the province of Burgos, in the municipality of Villasur de Herreros, autonomous community of Castilla y León, Spain. Its owner is the Duero River Basin Authority, the entity responsible for its management.
It is a curved, gravity-type concrete dam, built at the head of the Arlanzón river basin with the purpose of regulation. In this way, the aim was to control the contributions received by the river and to prevent the melting snow from the Sierra de La Demanda from causing significant increases in flow and resulting in flooding. Indeed, the city of Burgos and the entire lower course of the river suffered periodic flooding throughout its history. Following the flood of 1930,[1] the construction of the dam was decided.
