The castle of La Bisbal, located in the center of the Catalan town of La Bisbal del Ampurdán, is the former episcopal palace residence of the bishops of Girona, who were lords of the city. It is an extraordinary example of civil architecture from the Middle Ages.
Documented since the year 1180, it was the scene of fierce confrontations between the Cruïlles family and the bishopric of Girona during the 12th and 13th centuries. Ultimately, the bishopric would receive full civil and criminal jurisdiction over the town by decision of James I of Aragon. From here, the bishopric centralized the administration of its significant possessions.
