Belgians love Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. The pioneer of tourism on the Costa del Silencio, a mountainous desert area in the south of the island, was also a Fleming. In the 1960s, Michel Huygen, from Hoevenen in Antwerp, settled at Ten Bel (Tenerife Belgium) at the southernmost point, from scratch. It grew into a large village full of bungalows and a continuous row of shops and restaurants.
The local population is facing an acute housing shortage on the island, a consequence of many investments in building projects for affluent foreigners and tourists. Much less money went to basic infrastructure for the local population, leading to great dissatisfaction.
