Rubicón is today the name of the landscape at the southern end of the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote in the municipality of Yaiza. In the 15th/16th century, Rubicón was the name of a fortification or city with a bishopric in this area.
The name Rubicón is one of the first place names given by Europeans on the island of Lanzarote. It appears in the chronicle Le Canarien, written in French in the 15th century. One explanation for the name Rubicón is that it derives from the Latin rubicundus, meaning reddish, which is attributed to the volcanoes that appear reddish from the sea in the sunlight. Another explanation links the name to the Italian river Rubicon, after whose crossing there was no turning back for Julius Caesar.
