The Basilica and Marian Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Pine is located on the island of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Teror. It is situated in the main square of the Villa, the Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Pino. It is one of the most important spiritual temples in the Canary Islands and the first Marian temple in the Canary Islands to receive the title of basilica from the Holy See.
The population of the Marian Villa of Teror was primarily made up of descendants of conquerors and settlers of Gran Canaria. The name Terore appears in a document, dated December 1514, regarding the incorporation of the chapel of María de Terore to the Holy Cathedral Church of the Canary Islands, commissioned for this by the canon Juan de Troya, but it was considered a place of little significance, and the bishopric of the Canary Islands did not regard it as having a sufficient population to establish a resident priest; the cathedral chapter agreed in April 1528 to give five dobles to the cleric who celebrated the Eucharists on festive days and Sundays each year.
