The Plaza Mayor of Villena is located next to Calle Mayor and follows the tradition of the Spanish main squares. Urbanistically, it is the main communication axis between the historic center and the modern city.
The first mention of this square dates back to the 14th century, although its formation represents a process that occurs over time, until it reaches its current shape. Originally, it was an open space that served as a meeting place for the Municipal Council, until in 1560 it was decided to build the Almudí in the northern corner of the square, a place intended for the storage of wheat from the granary, while the municipal sessions were simultaneously moved to the so-called Treasury Houses, in the Plaza de Santiago.
