The Castle of the Alcazaiba, or of San José, is one of the two castles that we find within the walled enclosure of the Castle of Guadalest. Its location, on a rock, dominates the entire valley and overlooks the Guadalest reservoir. It was built by the Muslims in the 11th century. It was very important in the Middle Ages. But the earthquakes of 1644 and 1748, and the blasting of 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession largely wiped it out. Only a few towers are currently preserved.
