The port of Requejada in Cantabria, is a river port located at the bottom of the course of the Saja River, about 3.5 miles from the mouth. It is currently privately managed by Julio Cabrero & Cia S.A.
Despite its natural disadvantages compared to the nearby port of Santander, during the nineteenth century the port of Requejada was the main point of departure for Castilian flour, ahead of the capital. This was due to the saving of the 20 kilometres of road that the flours still had to follow if they wanted to leave through Santander; however, the opening of the Alar-Santander railway in 1852 caused Requejada to lose its flour supremacy.
