Seville Customs

The Customs of Seville was the center aimed at auditing and taxing the goods arriving in the city. From the 16th century onwards, its relevance would grow by taxing with the "
almojarifazgo of the Indies" the goods coming from the New World.

The customs of the city had several headquarters throughout its history. In 1520, it was located in the corral of neighbors of San Juan de Dios, on Alfolí street.[1]​ Of all the taxes, the most important was the almojarifazgo, which the Crown had granted to the municipal council.[2]​ The
highest almojarifazgo was the one that taxed the entry into the city of luxury items, such as certain leathers, fabrics with gold or silver embroidery, colorants, spices, etc. In 1543, the
almojarifazgo of the Indies was created, which taxed the goods coming from America.[2]​
