The Matachel River is a river in central Spain, one of the most important tributaries of the Guadiana River. It stands out, to a large extent, and compared to other tributaries on the left bank of the Guadiana, for its extensive basin. The Matachel originates in the Cortijo del Bruto, near Azuaga, in Sierra Morena. From its source to its mouth near the town of Don Álvaro, which is close to the capital of Extremadura, the Matachel completely crosses the province of Badajoz, practically dividing the Tierra de Barros region in half, of which it serves as the main waterway. In its final stretch, its course is regulated by the Alange dam.
