In the year 1326, Alfonso XI of Castile granted the place of Mucientes "with its little castle" to his chief steward Alvar Núñez Osorio. The document is the first written mention of what was a modest building, used until the 17th century as a residential palace by the successive counts of Ribadavia, lords of Mucientes.
