San Benito de la Contienda is a hamlet of the Spanish municipality of Olivenza, belonging to the province of Badajoz. According to several versions, the name San Benito de la Contienda derives from the ongoing disputes between Spaniards and Portuguese in which the town was involved. In one of these versions, the conflict is presented as a consequence of the Spanish claim that the border should go through the center of the town's church, which is why there existed an arch with the Castilian coat of arms in the main chapel of the town at the beginning of the 18th century. Another interpretation links the name to the toponym designating the fields where it is situated.
