Espiñeira[1] [2][3] is a Spanish village[4] located in the parish of Villaronte, in the municipality of Foz, in the province of Lugo, Galicia.
This place has historical records for its bridge connecting the municipalities of Foz and Barreiros, having the first toll bridge in Spain, which was a catalyst for trade throughout the A Mariña region of Lugo.
The bridge divides the area of "a espiñeira," with the left bank belonging to the municipality of Foz and the right bank to that of Barreiros. Thus, this place belongs to two parishes: the part of Foz to Villaronte and the part of Barreiros to San Cosme.
Until the early 1970s, it was an industrial enclave that housed large businesses in the timber sector, and previously had shipyards where wooden boats like "electra del masma" were built.
There was a Civil Guard barracks until the early 1970s and fairs were held on the 10th and 24th of each month.
It even had a mixed primary education school.
Since 2010, an industrial park has been promoted in the area belonging to the municipality of Barreiros, where several companies are already installed.
History mentions that during the time of King SILO in the 8th century, there was already a monastery in this place, although its remains have not been located.
Another historical reference to the place is the gold mines that are believed to have been in A Espiñeira, which is currently under investigation.
