The Cañón de la Salud is a unique historic building located on the wall of the Spanish city of Plasencia, in the province of Cáceres. It is a structure that serves interchangeably as a gate of the wall and as a Catholic hermitage. It was built in the Middle Ages as a simple gate of the wall, granting access to the inner city for those crossing the Jerte River at the nearby Trujillo bridge, the traditional entrance to the city from the south. However, in the 17th century, a great devotion developed here around the image of the Virgen de la Salud, which led to a major renovation between 1721 and 1723 that gave it its current structure. The facade of the building outside the walls is considered one of the main symbols of Plasencia, as it is the first monument of the old town visible from its southern access and is located in a very busy area.
