This monument is located on the famous Plaza de San Juan de Dios . It consists of a bronze statue of the liberal politician Segismundo Moret (who held the honorary title "favorite son" of the city of Cádiz) on a plinth with elaborate reliefs.
On the four sides of the monument are inscriptions saying "patriotismo" ("Patriotism"), "libertad" ("Freedom"), "lealtad" ("Loyalty"), "elocuencia" ("Eloquence").[7] A marble cartouche on the obverse reads "cádiz a moret" ("Cádiz to Moret").
Moret, as Secretary of Overseas, played a key role in the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico in 1870.
The monument was unveiled in 1909 . It was one of the rare instances where a monument was inaugurated while the honored person was still alive. Moret is said to have remarked that in his life he hated these kinds of tributes and that he felt that it would cost him displeasure, because happiness is very fickle for politicians.
