This arena is considered to be the world's first arena purpose-built for bullfighting . It is also seen as one of the most picturesque arenas in the world.
The first bullfight in May 1784 resulted in a partial collapse of the grandstand and the building had to be temporarily closed for repairs. A year later, in May 1785, it was reopened with a second opening event, known as one of the greatest bullfights in Ronda's history. Rivals Pedro Romero and Pepe Hillo faced each other for the most noble families of Ronda. Pedro Romero defeated more than 5,600 bulls . The Romero and Ordóñez families were known for their great bullfights in the Plaza, and bronze statues of Cayetano Ordóñez and son Antonio Ordóñez stand in front of one of the entrances to the bullring.
The Arena is built of sandstone and around the circle with a diameter of 66 meters are Tuscan columns that give the arena its typical appearance. Unique to this arena is the fact that the royal box and the entrance for the bulls are on the same side . The Arena is also the only one with a stone fence.
The arena can accommodate 5000 people . Very few fights are currently held in this ancient arena. Every year in the first week of September during the big fair week there are some fights. This is called the Corrida Goyesca. This is a bullfight where the bullfighters are dressed in traditional clothing from the time of Goya (18th century). These are therefore two days that the arena is completely sold out within a few minutes months in advance .
The arena itself can be visited all year round . You can also visit the weapon museum, the bullfight museum and a collection of horse harnesses that are located in the vaults of the arena
