The monastery was founded in 1539 as the Monastery of San Juan de Letrán. In 1586 the Order of the Observants founded the convent of the Augustinian friars and built a better church which was consecrated in 1587.
The decline began in the nineteenth century when in 1835 there were only six Augustinians and exile forced them to leave. After leaving the monastery it fell into ruins and only the church remained.
In 1600 Jacome Velardí was hired for a statue of Christ. The image is two meters high. On the morning of Good Friday , the statue is carried in procession into the city , followed by a large number of devotees.
