This is one of the oldest squares in the city. It has a trapezoidal floor plan.
The outer pavement adjacent to the square has a row of elms on the outer edge , which are gradually being replaced by other species such as hackberry. In the inner part of the sidewalk we find a row of bitter orange trees that perfume the square in spring with the intense scent of their orange blossom.
The houses surrounding the square were built for the most part from the end of the 19th century with predominant elements from the Romantic era. House number 15, known as Asilo de Oviedo in the Elizabethan style, stands out for its pilasters and corbels with figures of eagles attached to the facade. Also noteworthy is house number 6 , which was built in 1906 and combines glass and iron architecture.
In the parterres are a few striking specimens of tree species.
Another characteristic feature of this square is the bronze statue of Emilio Castelar , great orator and last president of the First Republic.
