The first walls that the city had were built in the second century, during the Roman period, with a circumference of about 2,650 meters and an area of about 47.6 hectares. This walled enclosure had four gates facing each of the four cardinal points.
This wall stretched along the perimeter of the old historic center . Today only part of it has survived. Since the presence of walls promoted poor hygienic conditions in cities and turned them into real nests of disease , most of the old and medieval walls in all of Europe were demolished in the mid-19th century.
During a recent restoration , the wall has been stripped of the vegetation that sheltered it, only two cypress trees have been preserved. In this way it has been possible to restore the old walkway of the wall, which is higher than the rest of the street.
