The hermitage is located next to the Compás viewpoint .

After the conquest by the Crown of Castile of the last strongholds for the capital of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, the legends of Mary and holy apparitions multiplied .
The legend of the apparition of the Virgin of La Peña follows the typical pattern of other apparitions .
The vision is attributed to the brothers Juan and Asunción Bernal Linaire, who in 1586, while shepherding atop the castle tower, saw a dove being transfigured into the Virgin.
