The hermitage is located next to the Compás viewpoint .
It was carved into the rock by a Carmelite monk in the second half of the 17th century . It houses the image of the Virgen de la Peña, patron saint of Mijas.
After the conquest by the Crown of Castile of the last strongholds for the capital of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, the legends of Mary and holy apparitions multiplied .
The legend of the apparition of the Virgin of La Peña follows the typical pattern of other apparitions .
The vision is attributed to the brothers Juan and Asunción Bernal Linaire, who in 1586, while shepherding atop the castle tower, saw a dove being transfigured into the Virgin.
