L'eremo si trova vicino al belvedere di Compás .
Fu scolpito nella roccia da un monaco carmelitano nella seconda metà del XVII secolo . Ospita l'immagine della Virgen de la Peña, patrona di Mijas.
Dopo la conquista da parte della Corona di Castiglia delle ultime roccaforti per la capitale del Regno dei Nasridi di Granada, si moltiplicarono le leggende di Maria e le sante apparizioni .
La leggenda dell'apparizione della Vergine della Peña segue lo schema tipico di altre apparizioni .
La visione è attribuita ai fratelli Juan e Asunción Bernal Linaire, che nel 1586, mentre pascolavano in cima alla torre del castello , videro una colomba trasfigurarsi nella Vergine.
