On a plinth with reliefs is the bronze figure of Ángel de Saavedra , the Duke of Rivas.
The Duke of Rivas was a playwright, poet, historian, painter and statesman, who is known today for his romantic drama Don Álvaro or the Power of Destiny.
This sculpture was said to be enough on its own to justify the fame of the author , who demanded that the city council build something that would serve as a backdrop to the monument and block the view of the old military pavilions.
To this end, the city council ordered the construction of the Neoclassical Pérgola which can still be seen today and was completed in 1930.
