Description

The Plaza del Potro is a small picturesque square in the center of Córdoba with narrow side streets and wooden window boxes.

In the Middle Ages , this rectangular square was the commercial center of the city and in the Golden Age the meeting place for villains from the city.

"Potro" means foal in Spanish, which refers to the foal that stands in the fountain of this square. This colt has clutched the coat of arms of the city of Córdoba in its paws. This Renaissance style fountain dates from 1577.
On the Plaza del Potro you will also find the famous Posada del Potro, the inn quoted by Cervantes in his book Don Quixote. The Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts) and the Museum Julio Romero de Torres are also located near this square.

Since 1924, at the other end of the square, there has been a monument dedicated to the "Triumph of the Archangel Raphael", the Triunfo de San Rafael.
