Hermitage of Our Lady of Mercy - Iznájar - Andalusia

This church dates from the 17th century.

It consists of a large pedimented nave and an 18th-century chapel at the end, which has the particularity of having nine sections with eight vaults and a small central dome raised on four columns, which gives it a particular character .

Inside is the statue of Our Lady of Mercy, Patroness of Iznájar. The picture is dated to the middle of the 15th century .
In the Hermitage there is an arch on the right that leads to the Chapel of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth. The chapel surmounts a Renaissance altar . This altarpiece serves as an introduction to the beautiful and curious Baroque chapel in which the Christ is kept. This chapel is decorated with plaster motifs of fauna and flora as well as symbols of martyrdom and a canvas in the background with a simple Pietà. Beneath this cloth is the popularly known "Mascarón de la Antigua" , a face with grotesque plaster features that represents the figure of Simon the Cyrene.

The popularity of the Good Friday Calvary procession has led to the 1702 sculpture of Jesus Nazarene being considered by residents to be the lord of Holy Week in Iznájar and receiving institutional recognition in 2017 on the occasion of the extraordinary procession
