Plaça Nova is the oldest square in Granada.
The plaza was built to make room and cover the Rio Darro river ; This river now flows under the square.
In those days it was a popular place for bullfights and public executions . Currently the square is centrally located between the newer center and the route to the Albaicín district via the Carrera del Darro (a beautiful walking route along the Darro River) and the Paseo dels Tristes. It is a popular area with many bars and restaurants (especially Carrer Elvira and Carrer Calderería) and an area with many hotels due to its central location.
