Callejones Avenue is so named because until the 1940s it was part of a network of avenues or "lanes" that connected the numerous orchards in the Ubrique River valley.
It may have been in 1824 that this name was first put down in writing. At the end of the 19th century, with the construction of the new cemetery on the other side of the river , a bridge was built to this as yet undeveloped orchard area. The path was marked on both banks by banana trees and stone benches . Most trees still survive in Los Callejones; The pews were removed and replaced with depersonalized seats.
But it was not until the 20th century that the city began to expand along this new street .
The Los Callejones and Esperanza fountains, at the beginning and end of the street, are still original and provide pedestrians with fresh water , somewhat hardened by the flow of limestone.
