The monument to Sant Joan Baptista de La Salle was one of the ideas that arose to commemorate the tercentenary of the saint's birth and the fiftieth anniversary of his canonization .
The blessing and laying of the foundation stone of the monument in Mamelón Square took place on December 3 , 1950 . The inauguration took place on May 25, 1952.
La Salle is an institution based in almost a hundred countries dedicated to education “based on human and Christian values” . The La Salle centers are named after Sant Joan Baptista de La Salle , who “collaborated with some teachers in the late 17th century to run schools for poor children. With them he founded the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools”.
