The diocesan shrine of the evangelical Lord St. Luke was built in the Middle Ages and underwent significant changes in the Baroque period.
It has primitive chapels , Baroque additions and altarpieces of great beauty that have led to it being cataloged as a monument in the General Catalog of Andalusian Historical Heritage.
The Church of San Lucas is one of the Churches of the Distribution , following the reconquest of the city by Alfonso X the Wise. It was built on the site of one of the mosques of old Andalusian Jerez . The date of construction is uncertain, although some authors place it in the 15th century.
Inside, it houses a pantheon of famous Jerezans, such as Don Pedro de Benavente and Cabeza de Vaca.
The church is the canonical seat of the Cofradía de Dolores – Hermandad de las Tres Caídas , which has the beneficial interest in the church.
The main entrance can be reached via a staircase that connects the church with the square. At the top of the main façade is a depiction of the patron saint, Saint Luke the Evangelist . Despite the external changes over the centuries , the main entrance can still be considered to have been preserved in its original form.
The interior consists of three naves with plaster covering the primitive Mudéjar work. The most important baroque altarpiece is the work of Fracisco López (1723). It is presided over by a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe dedicated to Alfonso XI. gave to the temple. Because according to the Codices, a Virgin of Guadalupe was created by Saint Luke himself in the first century of Christianity, the image was with the evangelist at the time of his death in Achaia (Asia Minor).
The high altar also has 18th-century frescoes.
The Santa Anna Chapel is at the head of the church and has clear Mudejar characteristics. 18th century altarpiece. The Ánimas Chapel is Gothic in style with an altarpiece by Francisco Camacho de Mendoza (1725).
