Many visitors to Cordoba are surprised to find a memorial dedicated to the Archangel San Rafael in a small square or on top of a tower. In years of great suffering or great plagues, the people of Cordoba expressed their veneration for their guardian angel by building these triumphal statues all over the city.
On the Roman bridge: This statue is the oldest of them all. It was created by Bernabé Gómez del Río, a sculptor who made most of his artistic work in Córdoba. Dating from 1651 , it was incorporated into a parapet of the Roman bridge to bless all visitors passing through the Puerta del Puente.
The residents of the nearby Campo de la Verdad neighborhood show their special devotion by offering candles and flowers.
