The Church of El Salvador and Santo Domingo de Silos, also known colloquially as the Church of the Company , has its origins in the church of the College of Santa Catalina, the first Jesuit institution in Andalusia.
Construction of the church of the College of Santa Catalina began in 1564 , and on January 12, 1589, the church was consecrated with a religious function presided over by Francisco Pacheco de Córdoba, but nine months later, on September 21, a storm destroyed the bell tower and the clock, which was later erected.
The sacristy was built in 1723 after a design by Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo. In the mid-18th century , the Chapel of the Annunciation (Chapel of the Tabernacle) was added, which was built as the school's chapel and was initially separate from the church .
After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, and given the abolition of the college, the church remained unused . Bishop Baltasar de Yusta y Navarro ordered the union of the Parish of the Church of Santo Domingo de Silos and the Parish of the Church of El Salvador . Thus, on December 16, 1782, the procession of the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament from the Church of Santo Domingo de Silos to the church was held. This union entailed the physical separation of the Colegio de Santa Catalina from the current church. To separate the two buildings, a wall was built to separate the college from the church, which still stands today.
