The Gran Teatro de Córdoba was designed by the architect Amadeo Rodríguez and was inaugurated on April 13, 1873 with the performance of the zarzuela Marta.
Until 1970, when it closed, it underwent several renovations that did not affect the original structure. After a request for demolition by the owners, the Municipal Institute for Performing Arts (IMAE) took over the hall in 1982, after the building was declared a historical-artistic heritage. After the restoration it opened its doors on May 20 , 1986 .
The Gran Teatro retains its original structure with a horseshoe - shaped hall and has a capacity of nearly one thousand seats . The International Guitar Festival , a world reference for flamenco music and culture, is held here every year and has a very packed schedule all year round.
