The square takes its name from the disappeared Monastery of La Encarnación, of the Order of Saint Augustine, whose building occupied part of the square.
Since 1580, mention has been made of the Plaza de Regina, which occupied part of the north side of the current one, while the Plaza de Don Pedro Ponce was on the south side
In 1587, the city government purchased several buildings between this last square and Laraña Street in order to demolish them and expand the space. The fountain that stands there today was installed in the 18th century . At the beginning of the 19th century, during the French invasion, the Monastery of La Encarnación was demolished and a market was built in the center.
In 1948, the extension of the main Campana - Osario axis was proposed, demolishing the southern third of the market, then reborn the garden square with the fountain; Finally , what remained of the market was demolished in 1973 due to its dilapidated state.
The site has remained undeveloped since 1973 and was used as a parking lot or bus depot.
In 2004, an international ideas competition was organized for the rehabilitation of the square, which was won by the German architect Jürgen Mayer with the Metropol Parasol project , consisting of a construction in the shape of six large mushrooms.
