The Monastery of San Leandro belongs to the order of the Augustinian hermit sisters, was founded in 1369 and the construction of the current church was completed in the 16th century and reformed in the 18th century.
The entrance to the monastery is through a simple door opening onto a small square in front of the church of San Ildefonso, which leads to a small courtyard whose walls contain the main entrance, the salon and the lathe. The sweets made in the workshop are very famous, especially the yemas de San Leandro, a real kiss from the angel. They also make church ornaments and other handicrafts.
The building has an almost quadrangular plan, with three exterior facades. It has two galleries with small metal pillars and a third with columns. Around it are the main entrance and the salons, as well as the lathe. Behind the main entrance there is an arched entrance leading to the cloister. This, also known as the 'great courtyard' or 'central courtyard' , has a diamond-shaped structure, with a double gallery of perpendicular arches on the ground floor and semi-circular arches on the upper floor. In the center of the courtyard is an interesting polygonal fountain with a central bowl.
The current church, built at the end of the 16th century, is covered with a semicircular dome on pendentives. Inside the church, in addition to the interesting furniture, there is a beautiful door from 1729.
The most striking part of the building is the area that includes the corner between Calle Zamudio and Plaza de San Ildefonso, known as <del obrador> . Here are the rooms used for making the typical sweets of this monastery, around a courtyard known as <San José>.
Another interesting core is the novitiate. This is also organized around a courtyard and is located at the back of the plot, with a facade towards Caballerizas Street.
