The Plaza del Triunfo is a unique place, surrounded by iconic and historic buildings such as the Cathedral, the Monastery of La Encarnación, the Archives of the Indies, the Palace of Reales Alcázares and the building that houses the Casa de la Provincia, formerly the Provincial House , and it is also the entrance to the Santa Cruz district, formerly the Jewish quarter.
This irregularly shaped square was called the "Plazuela de la Lonja" in the Archives of the Indies, but since the 18th century it has been called "Plaza del Triunfo".
The name is the result of the devastating earthquake in Lisbon on November 1, 1755, The earthquake was felt 1755 around 10:05 am, during the celebration of Mass in the Cathedral , interrupted and continued on the Plaza de los Cantos, now Plaza del Triunfo, where the catastrophe claimed only nine victims . was considered at the time a miracle of the Virgin, so it was decided to erect a Triumph (monument) in his honor at the place where the mass ended that day.
In the Middle Ages and modern times, it is likely that the space that currently encompasses the square was given different nicknames depending on the proximity and prominence of the public buildings surrounding it (Plaza del Alcázar; Plaza del Corral de los Olmos, Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, Plaza del Hospital del Rey).
